Neapolitan Puff Stitch Crochet Hat Pattern
Introduction
This hat features a puff stitch design and uses some yarn that I absolutely adore. The hat can be made in any size due to the flexibility of the pattern. I will also provide a list of general sizes for reference in the description box. This pattern is worked double-stranded to give the puff stitch a nice, plump, and lush look.
Materials Needed
- Yarn: A 50g pack of yarn from Teemu (100% acrylic, very soft, and ideal for this project). One pack yields one hat when double-stranded.
- Hook: 6 mm hook.
- Optional: Pom pom for decoration.
Steps
Top of the Hat
- Magic Circle:
- Use a magic circle to start or chain 4 and join to form a circle.
- Pull up on the loop slightly to start the first puff stitch.
- Puff Stitch:
- Pull up on the loop to about half an inch.
- Yarn over, insert the hook into the magic circle, yarn over and pull up a loop three times.
- You should have several loops on your hook (depends if doubled-stranded).
- Yarn over and pull through all loops, chain one.
- Repeat to make 6 puff stitches in the circle.
- Round 2:
- Slip stitch in the space between puff stitches, chain one, and pull up a loop.
- Work 2 puff stitches in each stitch around to double the stitch count (12 puff stitches).
- Round 3:
- Slip stitch to the space between puff stitches.
- Alternate between 2 puff stitches in a stitch and 1 in the next (increasing the count progressively).
- Subsequent Rounds:
- Increase as necessary until you reach the desired circumference, calculated by diameter * π (Pi).
Hat Body
- Transition to Body Rounds:
- Once the desired size is reached, stop increasing.
- Work one puff stitch in each space around, omitting the chain 1 between puffs to pull the hat shape tighter.
- Color Changes:
- To change colors, join the new yarn in the last stitch of a round.
- Work a round of half double crochets in the new color.
- Stripes:
- Continue with color changes every 2-2.5 inches according to the Neapolitan theme (cream, pink, tan).
Brim
- Foundation:
- After completing the body, join the brim color.
- Work a round of half double crochet in each puff stitch.
- Front Post & Back Post Stitches:
- Yarn over, work around the post of each half double crochet (alternating front post and back post) to form a ribbing effect.
- Repeat for 3 rounds or as needed for the desired thickness.
Conclusion
- If using, add a pom pom made from leftover yarn or a pre-made one.
- Slip stitch to the beginning of the round to finish off.
- Hide any yarn ends securely.
Thank you for watching! I hope you enjoy making this cozy Neapolitan Puff Stitch Hat. Until next time, take care!
