Crochet mittens are like a warm hug for your hands. They're cozy, soft, and perfect for chilly days. Making them is fun and creative! You pick your favorite colors and make stitches with a hook and yarn to form the mittens. You start at the bottom, making a stretchy band that fits snugly on your wrists. Then, you crochet the hand part, making it as long as you like.
Crochet Mittens
They're great for playing in the snow or just keeping toasty. Plus, they make sweet gifts for friends and family. Everyone's hands deserve to be happy and warm!
Materials
- Acrylic yarn in three colors (for this example: brown, pink, and cream)
- A pair of scissors
- Crochet hook size 4.5 mm
- Needle for weaving in ends
Mitten Ribbing
Start with the Ribbing: Create a slip knot and chain 21 (or any number +1 for your desired ribbing length, if you prefer a shorter ribbing, start with fewer chains, such as 10 chains for 11 stitches including the turning chain).
- Skip the first chain from the hook and make a slip stitch into the second chain.
- Repeat slip stitching in every chain till the end. You will have 20 slip stitches for this example.
- Chain 1, turn your work, and for each new row: slip stitch into the back loop only of each stitch across.
- Repeat step 4 until you have done a total of 40 rows for a long rib or adjust rows for a shorter length.
- Fold the ribbing piece in half with the right sides facing each other and slip stitch the ends together along the side.
Body of the Mitten
- Start the Mitten Body: Join a new color yarn at the seam created by the previous step.
- Distribute 30 single crochet stitches evenly around the edge of the ribbing to start the body of the mitten.
- Work 2 more rounds of 30 single crochets each, without increasing.
- Begin Pattern Increases: In the next round, increase by making 4 single crochets and then 2 single crochets into the next (repeat around).
- Switch to another color (or continue with the same if preferred) and work four rounds of 36 single crochet stitches.
Continue the Mitten Body: After the color change, continue by working 28 single crochet stitches, leaving 8 stitches unworked for the thumb.
- Join to round and work in rounds of 28 stitches, changing colors every four rows, until you have completed 24 rounds total from where you started the body.
- Decrease for the top of the mitten by single crocheting two stitches together around until closed.
Thumb
- Making the Thumb: Pick up stitches around the thumb hole, distributing 8 single crochets evenly.
- Work in rounds until the thumb is the desired length, typically 9 rounds.
- Decrease over the next couple of rounds until the thumb is closed.
- Use a needle to weave in all ends securely.
Finishing Touches
- Turn the mitten right side out.
- Sew any loose ends and tidy up the mitten for a finished look.
